Lost and Found

The Bear That Brought Him Back · Chapter 6 of 6

Chapter 6

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Baltimore police surrounded Johns Hopkins before we arrived.

Real police this time.

We made certain of that.

The release of the ledger had changed everything.

Detective Keene was in custody.

Several officers had already been suspended.

Federal agents from Washington—not Baltimore—were taking control.

Vittorio's network was collapsing by the hour.

Which made him more dangerous.

A man with nothing left to lose does not negotiate like a man expecting tomorrow.

Denise was being held somewhere inside the same VIP wing where Alessandro had been declared dead.

The symmetry wasn't accidental.

Vittorio wanted a stage.

He wanted his final moment to mean something.

I wanted Denise alive.

“You are not going inside,” David said.

We stood beside an ambulance command post.

“I am.”

“No.”

“You don't get to tell me no anymore.”

“Cat—”

“He asked for me.”

“That's exactly why you can't go.”

“If we refuse, Denise could die.”

“And if we go, you could.”

Alessandro watched us.

Finally he said, “Catherine decides.”

David glared at him.

“You don't get a vote.”

“Apparently neither do you.”

Marcus almost smiled.

Wrong moment.

I touched David's hand.

“For two years, you stayed away because you thought you were protecting me.”

“I was.”

“And look where we are.”

His eyes filled.

“This isn't fair.”

“No.”

I squeezed his hand.

“But we're doing it together.”

He nodded reluctantly.

Logan stayed outside the hospital.

That part was non-negotiable.

A federal agent named Laura Bennett personally promised me she would remain beside him.

I knelt in front of Logan.

“I have to go inside for a little while.”

“Is Daddy going?”

“Yes.”

“Is the hospital bad?”

“No, sweetheart.”

I looked at the building where I had spent countless nights cleaning floors to keep food on our table.

“Some bad people are inside.”

Logan held Captain Bear toward me.

“Take Captain.”

My throat tightened.

“You need him.”

“He helped the man.”

He pointed toward Alessandro.

“He can help you.”

I accepted the bear.

“Thank you.”

“Bring him back.”

“Who?”

“Captain.”

Then Logan thought.

“And Daddy.”

David turned away, wiping his eyes.

“I'll do my best.”

We entered the hospital.

The corridors looked almost exactly as they had three nights earlier.

That was the strangest part.

Hospitals don't care that your life has changed.

The lights remain bright.

Machines keep beeping.

Nurses keep pushing carts.

Somebody is always being born while someone else dies.

We reached the VIP floor.

Vittorio called.

Alessandro answered on speaker.

“Brother.”

“Welcome back.”

“Release the woman.”

“When I see the ledger.”

“You know copies exist.”

“Yes.”

“Then this is pointless.”

“Not to me.”

Vittorio's voice hardened.

“You stole everything.”

Alessandro's expression changed.

“Our father chose you. The family followed you. The businesses belonged to you.”

“You had half.”

“I had leftovers.”

“You had millions.”

“I wanted the name.”

Alessandro looked tired.

“All these people died because you were jealous?”

“Don't reduce me.”

“Then give me something worth understanding.”

Silence.

Then Vittorio said, “Bring Catherine.”

David shook his head.

I took the phone.

“I'm here.”

Vittorio chuckled.

“The widow.”

“Not anymore.”

That silenced him.

“Where's Denise?”

A woman's voice screamed faintly.

Alive.

“Show me the ledger.”

“We don't have it.”

Vittorio's voice went cold.

“Then Denise dies.”

“The original was transferred to federal custody.”

That was true.

“Copies are with prosecutors and reporters. Killing us won't erase anything.”

Another long silence.

I continued.

“You lost.”

“I haven't.”

“You did two years ago.”

“What?”

“When David stayed alive.”

I felt David watching me.

“You lost again when Alessandro survived.”

No answer.

“And you lost when a three-year-old walked into that room and reminded everybody there's still something in this world bigger than fear.”

Vittorio laughed, but the sound was different now.

Unstable.

“You think a child saved Alessandro?”

“No.”

I looked at Alessandro.

“Doctors did.”

He almost smiled.

“But Logan gave the room something you never understood.”

“What?”

“Hope.”

David squeezed my hand.

Vittorio hung up.

Seconds later, an alarm sounded.

Fire alarm.

Red lights flashed.

Smoke appeared from the far corridor.

“He's moving,” Marcus shouted.

Federal agents rushed upstairs.

We stayed near the trauma suite.

Then Denise appeared through the smoke.

Her hands were tied.

“Catherine!”

I ran toward her.

David shouted.

“Stop!”

Too late.

Vittorio stepped from behind the doorway.

He wrapped an arm around Denise and held a gun near her shoulder.

He was elegant.

That surprised me.

He wore a dark suit.

Silver hair.

Calm eyes.

He looked like the type of man who chaired charity dinners.

Not the monster who had stolen two years of my life.

“Catherine Winters.”

I stopped.

David moved beside me.

Alessandro stepped forward.

“Let her go.”

Vittorio smiled.

“Dead men should stay dead.”

“So should old grudges.”

“This isn't a grudge.”

Vittorio looked at David.

“You cost me an empire.”

David shook his head.

“You destroyed it yourself.”

Vittorio's face changed.

For the first time I saw rage.

“You were an accountant.”

“Yes.”

“You should have stayed an accountant.”

“I did.”

David almost smiled.

“I counted your money.”

Even Alessandro laughed.

Vittorio pressed the gun harder against Denise.

“Enough.”

We froze.

He looked at me.

“Give me the key.”

I frowned.

“The key doesn't matter anymore.”

“I want it.”

Captain Bear was still in my arms.

The little metal key had been secured by federal investigators.

But Vittorio didn't know that.

I reached into Captain Bear's torn seam and pretended to remove something.

Vittorio watched.

“Throw it.”

I closed my fist around nothing.

Then threw my hand toward the floor.

Vittorio's eyes followed.

For one second.

That was all Marcus needed.

He moved.

Denise dropped.

David pulled me backward.

Alessandro lunged toward his brother.

A gunshot exploded.

Everything stopped.

Alessandro looked down.

Blood appeared on his shirt.

Again.

“No!”

He fell.

Federal agents swarmed the corridor.

Vittorio ran.

Marcus chased him.

David and I dropped beside Alessandro.

“Stay with me.”

Alessandro stared at the ceiling.

“This is becoming repetitive.”

“Don't joke!”

Doctors rushed toward us.

Denise was crying nearby but alive.

They lifted Alessandro onto a gurney.

For one horrible second, the image became exactly what I'd seen three nights earlier.

Alessandro.

Hospital bed.

Blood.

Doctors running.

No.

Not again.

Vittorio reached the end of the corridor.

Marcus tackled him near the stairwell.

Federal agents surrounded them.

Vittorio fought until he saw Alessandro being rushed toward surgery.

Then something left his face.

The anger.

The arrogance.

Everything.

He looked suddenly old.

He whispered, “Brother.”

Alessandro heard him.

The gurney paused for half a second.

The brothers looked at each other.

One had spent his life escaping the darkness their family created.

The other had spent his life believing he deserved to rule it.

Alessandro said quietly, “It didn't have to end this way.”

Vittorio looked away.

Agents took him into custody.

No dramatic execution.

No revenge.

No final bullet.

Just handcuffs.

Sometimes the most powerful ending is watching a man who believed himself untouchable discover that the law finally knows his name.

Alessandro survived surgery.

Barely.

Again.

The surgeon emerged after nearly four hours.

“He's stable.”

Marcus sat down and covered his face.

David hugged me.

Denise cried.

I thought it was over.

Then Agent Bennett appeared at the end of the hallway.

She wasn't smiling.

I stood.

“Logan?”

“He's fine.”

I breathed.

“What is it?”

She looked at David.

“Mr. Winters, we need to talk.”

David stiffened.

“About what?”

“The ledger.”

I felt fear returning.

“What about it?”

“There are crimes documented there.”

“Yes.”

“Some involve Romano companies during years Mr. Romano controlled them.”

Alessandro was unconscious upstairs.

David stepped forward.

“He was trying to dismantle those operations.”

“That may matter.”

“May?”

Agent Bennett remained professional.

“David, you concealed evidence for two years.”

“He was kidnapped.”

“For part of that period.”

I grabbed his hand.

“What are you saying?”

“We're saying this isn't finished.”

David looked at me.

The nightmare had ended.

But consequences hadn't.

He kissed my forehead.

“This time, I'm not disappearing.”

“You better not.”

“I mean it.”

“So do I.”

He smiled.

Then agents escorted him downstairs for questioning.

I stood in the same hospital where, four nights earlier, I'd been an exhausted widow hiding her child in a supply closet because I couldn't afford childcare.

Now my husband was alive.

The man who had known the truth was alive.

The man responsible was under arrest.

And yet I had no idea whether my family would ever have a normal life.

Then Logan came running around the corner.

“Mommy!”

I dropped to my knees.

He hit me like a little missile.

“Where's Daddy?”

“Talking to some people.”

“Did you bring Captain?”

I held up the bear.

His face lit.

“I told you he'd help.”

I hugged him.

“Yes.”

Captain Bear had helped.

But this time, so had the truth.

And for the first time in two years, the truth was no longer something powerful men could bury.

It belonged to all of us.
