Chapter 4

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Administrative leave sounds gentle.

It isn’t.

It feels exactly like being fired except nobody has enough courage to call it that yet.

My company access disappeared by midnight.

My assistant was instructed to route campaign questions through another director.

The project I had built for seven months continued without me.

Worst of all, gossip sites treated my absence as proof.

KANE’S SECRET LOVER REMOVED FROM COMPANY.

BILLIONAIRE BOSS CAUGHT IN OFFICE AFFAIR.

SINGLE MOM AT CENTER OF KANE GLOBAL SCANDAL.

None of it was true.

Truth had become irrelevant.

Daniel called three times.

I ignored him.

Then an email arrived.

This could all disappear if you stopped fighting me.

I forwarded it directly to Rachel.

She called within sixty seconds.

“He just helped us.”

“How?”

“Coercion.”

“He’ll say he meant the custody fight.”

“Let him explain it.”

For the first time in days, I smiled.

Rachel continued.

“And Natalie?”

“Yes?”

“Do not respond to him.”

“I won’t.”

“Do not confront him.”

“I won’t.”

“And do not let Adrian Kane threaten him.”

I sat straighter.

“Why would Adrian threaten him?”

Rachel was silent.

“How do you know Adrian threatened him?”

“I don’t.”

“That sounded extremely specific.”

“Natalie.”

“What happened?”

She sighed.

“Daniel’s attorney contacted me this morning claiming Mr. Kane’s private security team is intimidating their client.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

I called Adrian.

He answered immediately.

“Natalie.”

“Did you threaten Daniel?”

“No.”

“Did your security team threaten Daniel?”

“No.”

“Did anybody employed by you follow him?”

“Yes.”

I stood.

“Adrian!”

“He followed you and Mia.”

“So you followed him?”

“My investigators documented his contact with several tabloid photographers.”

I stopped.

“What?”

“Daniel isn’t only sending pictures to gossip sites.”

Adrian’s voice became colder.

“He’s selling them.”

My stomach turned.

“How do you know?”

“We have photographs.”

“You had him followed.”

“Yes.”

“You can’t do that.”

“I can legally hire an investigator to observe someone in public.”

“You sound far too comfortable saying that.”

“I have lawyers.”

“Of course you do.”

Despite everything, I nearly smiled.

Then his tone changed.

“Natalie, Daniel has debt.”

“What kind?”

“Significant.”

“How significant?”

“Approximately four hundred thousand dollars.”

I sat down.

“That’s impossible.”

“Business loans, private loans, gambling-related debt.”

That explained everything.

Not remorse.

Not fatherhood.

Money.

“He thinks he can get money from me?”

“Possibly through you. Possibly through publicity. Possibly through a settlement.”

I felt sick.

“He used Mia.”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s voice softened.

“And I’m sorry.”

I stared out my apartment window.

New York continued moving beneath me as if my life weren’t collapsing.

“What happens now?”

“We prove it.”

“You keep saying we.”

Silence.

Then:

“I know.”

“Why?”

His answer was quiet.

“Do you really need me to explain?”

My heart beat harder.

Maybe I did.

Maybe I desperately wanted him to.

But I was afraid of what would happen if he did.

“I need to focus on Mia.”

“I agree.”

“And my custody case.”

“Yes.”

“And my job.”

“Yes.”

“I can’t…”

My voice cracked.

“I can’t become another scandal for you.”

“You aren’t.”

“The board disagrees.”

“The board is afraid of headlines.”

“And you aren’t?”

“No.”

“You should be.”

“I’ve spent my entire adult life having strangers write stories about me.”

“That doesn’t make it harmless.”

“No.”

His voice softened.

“It makes me understand that eventually you have to decide whether people who don’t know you are allowed to control your life.”

I closed my eyes.

We didn’t talk again that day.

Three days later, I received notice of an emergency custody hearing.

Daniel claimed the media attention surrounding Adrian created an unsafe environment for Mia.

The hypocrisy was breathtaking.

Rachel was almost cheerful.

“He’s overplaying his hand.”

“I don’t feel cheerful.”

“You don’t have to. That’s my job.”

At the hearing, Daniel wore a navy suit and a concerned-father expression.

I hated both.

His attorney described him as “a parent attempting to rebuild a relationship.”

Mine described six years of abandonment.

Then Daniel testified.

He cried.

Actual tears.

He said he had been young.

Confused.

Ashamed.

He claimed I had discouraged contact.

Rachel produced the emails.

His story began collapsing.

Then his attorney changed direction.

“Ms. Brooks is currently involved with one of the wealthiest men in New York.”

My attorney stood.

“Objection.”

“Sustained.”

Daniel’s attorney continued more carefully.

“Ms. Brooks’s daughter has developed a close relationship with her employer, correct?”

I answered honestly.

“She likes him.”

“Calls him Daddy?”

“No.”

“Asked him to become her daddy?”

My cheeks burned.

“She made a childish comment.”

“Which was photographed.”

“By someone apparently working with your client.”

The judge looked up.

Daniel’s attorney stiffened.

Rachel smiled slightly.

That mattered.

Then the judge asked for the investigator’s evidence.

Adrian’s team had documented Daniel meeting the same photographer who sold the pictures.

Bank records obtained through legal discovery showed payments.

Daniel’s expression changed.

For the first time, fear.

His attorney requested a recess.

When we returned, the judge denied Daniel’s request for expanded custody.

Supervised visitation remained possible pending further evaluation.

I nearly collapsed with relief.

It wasn’t over.

But Mia was coming home with me.

Outside the courthouse, cameras waited.

I stopped.

“Why are they here?”

Rachel swore quietly.

Reporters shouted.

“Natalie!”

“Are you dating Adrian Kane?”

“Did Kane finance your custody battle?”

“Did your daughter call him Daddy?”

I froze.

Then someone pushed through the crowd.

Tall.

Dark overcoat.

Gray-blue eyes.

Adrian.

My heart stopped.

He walked straight toward me.

“What are you doing here?” I whispered.

“Getting you to the car.”

“You’ll make it worse.”

“Probably.”

“Adrian.”

A reporter shouted:

“Mr. Kane, are you romantically involved with Ms. Brooks?”

He ignored them.

His hand hovered near my back without touching me.

Security opened a path.

Then another reporter shouted:

“Are you trying to replace the child’s father?”

Adrian stopped.

I felt everything inside me drop.

“Don’t,” I whispered.

He looked at the reporter.

Then at Daniel, who had appeared near the courthouse doors.

Cameras flashed.

Adrian’s expression became ice.

“I am not replacing anyone.”

Good.

We could survive that.

Then he continued.

“A man who abandons a child for six years and returns only after discovering an opportunity for money has no position for me to replace.”

Chaos erupted.

Reporters shouted.

Daniel’s face turned red.

I grabbed Adrian’s arm.

“Car. Now.”

Inside the SUV, I turned on him.

“What were you thinking?”

“That he deserved it.”

“This is not a boardroom!”

“I’m aware.”

“You just gave them another week of headlines.”

“Probably two.”

I stared at him.

He looked infuriatingly calm.

Then Mia’s voice came from the back seat.

“I liked it.”

We both turned.

My mother was sitting beside her, looking guilty.

“I was told to meet you in the car.”

Mia leaned forward.

“You sounded like Batman.”

Adrian blinked.

“Batman?”

“Rich. Angry. Nice car.”

My mother burst out laughing.

I tried not to.

Failed.

For thirty seconds, everything felt okay.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He answered.

Listened.

His jaw tightened.

“When?”

Another pause.

“I’m coming.”

He ended the call.

“What happened?”

He looked at me.

“The Kane Global board called an emergency session.”

My stomach tightened.

“Because of what you said?”

“Partly.”

“What else?”

He hesitated.

“Someone leaked internal documents suggesting I used company resources to support you.”

“Did you?”

“Security.”

“For Mia?”

“Yes.”

“Does that violate policy?”

“Potentially.”

I felt sick.

“Adrian…”

“It’ll be fine.”

“You don’t know that.”

He gave me the faintest smile.

“You say that a lot.”

It was the same thing he had once told me.

Except now neither of us believed it.

That evening, the news broke.

Adrian Kane had temporarily stepped aside from executive oversight of Blackwell & Reed pending an internal review.

The man who had never lost control of anything had risked his position because of us.

I called him.

He didn’t answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

At midnight, someone knocked on my apartment door.

I checked the peephole.

Adrian.

No security.

No driver.

No perfect billionaire armor.

He looked exhausted.

I opened the door.

“What happened?”

He stepped inside.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“They want me to choose.”

“Choose what?”

“My position at Blackwell & Reed.”

My stomach dropped.

“And?”

His eyes found mine.

“And staying involved with you and Mia.”

I stopped breathing.

“What did you tell them?”

He stepped closer.

“I told them they were asking the wrong question.”

My voice barely worked.

“What’s the right question?”

He looked at me for a long moment.

“Whether I’m willing to lose you both just to make them comfortable.”

My heart slammed painfully.

“And are you?”

His answer came without hesitation.

“No.”
