Victoria Bell looked nothing like a woman who had just kidnapped someone.
Her dark hair was perfectly arranged.
Her coat was expensive.
Her perfume smelled like white lilies.
And she was smiling at the little girl who had spent four days refusing food because she was terrified of her.
"Hello, Lily."
Lily buried her face against my shoulder.
I held her tighter.
"Stay away from her."
Victoria looked amused.
"Claire, please. You're making this unnecessarily dramatic."
"Where's my mother?"
"Safe."
"Then why are you here?"
Victoria glanced at the small silver key in her hand.
"Because your mother was always very good at hiding things."
I looked toward the hallway.
The emergency lights cast long shadows across the floor.
"Gabriel knows everything," I said.
"Gabriel knows what I wanted him to know."
She stepped closer.
I moved backward, keeping Lily behind me.
"Don't come any closer."
Victoria stopped.
Her expression changed.
For a moment, I saw something cold beneath the polished smile.
"You sound exactly like Rose."
I swallowed.
"Good."
Victoria laughed.
"Do you know what it's like to spend your entire life watching someone else inherit everything that should have been yours?"
I didn't answer.
"My father built an empire. Gabriel received the buildings, the companies, the money, the name."
She looked around the bedroom.
"And I received a monthly allowance and a warning never to call him Daddy."
"That doesn't give you the right to hurt a child."
Her smile disappeared.
"Lily was never supposed to be involved."
I stared at her.
"Then why did you frighten her?"
Victoria looked at the little girl.
"Because children hear things they shouldn't."
Lily began trembling.
I placed a hand against her back.
"It's okay, sweetheart. You don't have to listen."
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
"She heard Elena and me arguing."
My heart pounded.
"About what?"
"The accounts. The fire. The money."
"Did you kill Elena?"
Victoria looked away.
For the first time, she seemed uncertain.
"Elena was going to ruin everything."
I felt sick.
"She was your friend."
"She was Gabriel's wife."
"She trusted you."
Victoria's jaw tightened.
"She should have stayed out of it."
I looked at the little girl hiding against me.
"Did Lily see what happened?"
Victoria didn't answer.
But her silence was enough.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Victoria turned.
"Who is that?"
I recognized Dr. Hale's voice.
"Claire?"
Victoria moved toward the door.
I stepped between her and Lily.
"Don't."
She looked at me.
"You have no idea what you're doing."
"Maybe not."
I held Lily's hand.
"But I know you're not taking her anywhere."
Dr. Hale appeared in the doorway.
Behind her stood two uniformed police officers.
Victoria froze.
One officer spoke calmly.
"Victoria Bell, we need you to come with us."
Victoria looked at me.
Then at Lily.
For a moment, I thought she might try to run.
Instead, she slowly raised her hands.
The officers escorted her away.
Only when the bedroom door closed did Lily begin crying.
I knelt beside her.
"She's gone."
Lily looked at me.
"Forever?"
I couldn't promise that.
But I could promise something else.
"She can't hurt you right now."
Lily threw her arms around my neck.
I held her until her breathing slowed.
Dr. Hale checked her vital signs.
Then she looked at me.
"She needs rest."
I nodded.
But I couldn't stop thinking about Gabriel.
He had gone to Red Hook.
Victoria had been here.
Where was my mother?
My phone rang.
Gabriel.
I answered immediately.
"Gabriel?"
"Claire, are you safe?"
"Yes. Victoria's been arrested."
He exhaled.
"Thank God."
"Did you find my mother?"
A pause.
Then he said, "Yes."
My knees weakened.
"Is she okay?"
"She's alive."
I closed my eyes.
"Can I talk to her?"
A rustling sound.
Then my mother's voice.
"Claire?"
I began crying.
"Mom."
"Oh, sweetheart."
"Are you hurt?"
"I'm all right."
"Don't lie to me."
A small laugh.
Even now, she sounded like my mother.
"I'm bruised. I'm tired. And I'm going to need a very strong cup of tea."
I laughed through my tears.
"You're impossible."
"I know."
Then her voice softened.
"Claire, there's something I need to tell you."
"I know."
Silence.
"You know?"
"I found the birth certificate."
My mother began crying.
"I'm sorry."
"Mom."
"I wanted to tell you."
"Mom, listen to me."
She went quiet.
"You raised me."
A sob escaped her.
"You were there when I was sick. You taught me to read. You stayed awake when I had nightmares. You made every birthday special even when we couldn't afford a cake."
"Claire—"
"You are my mother."
She cried harder.
"And Rose is my mother too."
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered, "I hoped you would understand."
"I don't understand everything."
I looked toward Lily's bed.
"But I want to."
Gabriel returned to the penthouse shortly after midnight.
He looked exhausted.
His white shirt was wrinkled.
There was a small cut near his eyebrow.
But he was alive.
And behind him came my mother.
I ran toward her.
She opened her arms.
For the first time in thirty years, I held her knowing that our story had begun with a lie.
And for the first time, that lie didn't feel like betrayal.
It felt like a frightened woman trying to save a child.
Rose stood a few steps behind her.
I looked at her.
She didn't move closer.
She simply waited.
I reached out my hand.
She took it.
We stood there together.
Three women.
One family.
A family that had survived thirty years of secrets.
Gabriel watched us quietly.
Then Lily called from the bedroom.
"Daddy?"
He turned immediately.
She was sitting up.
Holding Button.
"Come here."
Gabriel crossed the room.
Lily reached for him.
He gathered her into his arms.
"Are you okay, sweetheart?"
She nodded.
Then she whispered, "I remember."
Gabriel went still.
"Remember what?"
Lily looked toward the doorway.
"The bad lady pushed Mommy."
The room fell silent.
Gabriel closed his eyes.
Lily continued.
"Mommy told me to hide. She said she'd come back."
Gabriel pressed his forehead against hers.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart."
"She didn't come back."
His voice broke.
"I know."
Lily began crying.
"Did Mommy forget me?"
Gabriel held her tighter.
"No, baby. She never forgot you."
I looked at Rose.
She was crying too.
Gabriel kissed Lily's forehead.
"Your mommy loved you more than anything in the world."
Lily rested her head against his chest.
"Can Claire sing?"
Gabriel looked at me.
I nodded.
Then I began humming the Little Lantern Song.
This time, Lily didn't tremble.
She closed her eyes.
And for the first time in four days, she fell asleep without fear.
