Lorenzo did not show Elena the photograph immediately.
He had learned that frightening someone into speaking rarely produced the whole truth.
Instead, he asked Gabe to investigate Margaret's employment records, financial accounts connected to the estate, and her recent communications.
By midnight, the first results arrived.
Margaret had received several unexplained payments through a consulting company registered in Delaware.
The company was connected to Daniel Carter.
Elena's husband.
A man who, according to her employment records, had disappeared more than two years earlier.
Lorenzo studied the photograph again.
Daniel stood outside Mercy Hospital wearing an expensive gray coat.
He did not look like a man struggling to pay child support.
He looked like a man who had never missed a meal.
The next morning, Elena arrived at work to find a message requesting her presence in Lorenzo's study.
She entered with her shoulders tense.
"Did I do something wrong?"
Lorenzo gestured toward the chair opposite his desk.
"Sit down."
She remained standing.
He placed the photograph on the desk.
Elena looked at it.
The color disappeared from her face.
"Where did you get that?"
"Margaret Bell had it."
Elena stepped backward.
"Why?"
"That's what I want to know."
She shook her head.
"No. No, he can't be here."
"Daniel Carter?"
Elena gripped the back of the chair.
"He's supposed to be gone."
"He's alive."
"I know he's alive."
Her voice broke.
"I just thought he'd stopped looking for us."
Lorenzo stood.
"Elena, what happened?"
She stared at the photograph.
Then she began to speak.
Three years earlier, Elena had worked in Mercy Hospital's cardiac intensive care unit.
She loved her job.
Even after Sophie was born, she had tried desperately to keep working.
Daniel had initially seemed supportive.
He offered to handle childcare.
He promised to help with the bills.
But gradually, Elena noticed changes.
He became secretive about his work.
He carried two phones.
He returned home at strange hours.
And he began asking questions about patients Elena had never mentioned.
One evening, she discovered a folder inside his briefcase.
It contained copies of confidential hospital billing records, patient identification numbers, and payment authorizations.
Some of the documents had been altered.
Elena recognized several patient names.
The patients had received legitimate medical treatment, but the financial records showed additional procedures that had never occurred.
She confronted Daniel.
He told her she was imagining things.
Then he warned her to forget what she had seen.
But Elena was a nurse.
She had spent years protecting vulnerable people.
She could not ignore evidence that patients and their insurers were being defrauded.
She copied the records and reported her concerns to the hospital's compliance department.
Two weeks later, her supervisor accused her of repeated attendance violations.
Some were real.
Others had been exaggerated.
Her appeal went nowhere.
Then Daniel disappeared.
Before leaving, he emptied their joint account.
Elena received a message from an unknown number.
Stop asking questions. Think about your daughter.
She moved apartments.
Changed her phone number.
And stopped telling people where she worked.
"I thought it was over," she whispered.
Lorenzo watched her.
"Why didn't you go to the police?"
"I tried."
"What happened?"
"The detective I spoke to asked me where I kept the original records. Three days later, Daniel called me and repeated the exact words I'd told the detective."
Lorenzo's expression darkened.
"Did you keep the records?"
Elena hesitated.
"Yes."
"Where?"
She shook her head.
"I can't tell you."
"Elena—"
"No."
Her voice rose.
"I have spent three years keeping Sophie safe. I will not risk her life because you want answers."
Lorenzo remained silent.
Then he nodded.
"All right."
She looked surprised.
"All right?"
"You don't have to tell me."
He moved the photograph aside.
"But Margaret knows Daniel. And someone connected to him has been watching you inside my house."
Elena's hands began to shake.
"Where is Sophie?"
"With Victoria."
"I need to get her."
Lorenzo picked up his phone.
"Gabe. Bring Sophie to my study. Now."
Five minutes later, Sophie entered holding her new teddy bear.
She ran toward Elena.
"Mommy!"
Elena dropped to her knees and embraced her.
Lorenzo watched as the woman who had stood defiantly before him the previous day now trembled with fear.
He understood something then.
Elena was not afraid of losing her job.
She was afraid of losing her daughter.
And someone had discovered exactly how to use that fear against her.
That afternoon, Gabe found another connection.
Daniel Carter's consulting company had received payments from a medical billing contractor that serviced several private hospitals.
One of those hospitals had treated Enzo Moretti shortly before his death.
Lorenzo stared at the records.
Enzo had visited the hospital for a routine examination three weeks before the garage incident.
The hospital's archived records showed that he had undergone an additional diagnostic procedure.
But Enzo had never mentioned it.
Lorenzo remembered the last conversation he had shared with his brother.
Enzo had seemed distracted.
He had said he was investigating a business partner.
He had promised to explain everything after a meeting in Melrose Park.
He never returned.
Lorenzo looked at Gabe.
"Find out whether Daniel Carter ever worked with anyone connected to Enzo."
Gabe nodded.
"And Margaret?"
"Keep her away from Elena and Sophie. Preserve everything she left behind."
That evening, Elena found Lorenzo in the sitting room.
Sophie was asleep on the sofa, her teddy bear tucked beneath her chin.
Elena stood beside the doorway.
"I need to tell you something."
Lorenzo looked up.
She approached the table.
From her pocket, she removed a small brass key.
"I kept the original records in a storage locker. Daniel doesn't know where it is."
Lorenzo did not reach for the key.
"Why are you telling me?"
"Because I heard you asking Gabe about your brother."
His expression changed.
Elena swallowed.
"Three years ago, when I copied the hospital records, I found a patient file that didn't belong with the others."
She looked directly at him.
"The patient's name was Enzo Moretti."
Lorenzo went completely still.
"What was in it?"
"A payment authorization. It wasn't for medical treatment."
"What was it for?"
Elena's voice dropped.
"A private transfer of confidential information."
Lorenzo stared at her.
"Who authorized it?"
She shook her head.
"I never found out."
Then Sophie stirred on the sofa.
"Mommy?"
Elena turned toward her daughter.
The little girl sat up, rubbing her eyes.
"Is the bad man coming?"
Elena froze.
Lorenzo approached slowly.
"What bad man, Sophie?"
She pointed toward the window.
"The man who came to our house."
Elena's face went white.
"What man?"
Sophie hugged her teddy bear.
"The man who said he was Daddy."
