What the River Cannot Tell · Chapter 7 of 15

The Wrong Carton

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

The donation ledger at the archive was my own system, built the first year I ran the place, three-part carbon slips filed by accession number in a gray cabinet nobody but me had reason to open. I went to verify the loan Silas had acknowledged, wanting to hold the actual tape in my hand before I said another word to anyone about what was on it, and the folder told me exactly where it should be: Box 14, Oral History, donated by me, Mara Ellery, in 1998, a forty-one-minute interview recorded for a county project that had never aired.

Box 14 was on the third shelf where it belonged, and the cassette case was inside it where it belonged too, a plain black shell with a typed label I remembered typing. I opened it to document its condition while the cassette was on loan. No cassette, just the hinged plastic shell and a faint rectangle in the foam padding where something had sat for eighteen years and then hadn't.

I checked the slip clipped to the inside cover, the one I required every borrower to sign, to confirm the loan date before renewing my demand. My own handwriting looked back at me. Checked out June 30, 2016. S. Trent, Cascadian production company, purpose: documentary research, original cassette, agreed return by. I'd filled it out myself, standing at this same cabinet, telling myself it was fine, he was a professional, he'd signed for it properly.

It wasn't theft. It was a loan I'd made, with my own signature on the authorizing line, before I understood what he intended to do with eleven seconds of a nine-year-old's voice. That was almost worse than theft, because there was no one to be angry at but the version of myself from three weeks ago who'd wanted, for one afternoon, to be the interesting center of someone's expensive film.

I photographed the empty case and the slip side by side, the way I'd learned to document everything that left the building, and sent both images to Silas with a short message, no accusation in it, because none was warranted. The tape is checked out to you as of June 30. I need it back, along with your full digital transfer of it, by end of week. Then I set the empty case back in Box 14, lid open, because closing it felt like pretending it still held something, and went to find the ledger page for 1998 to make sure I hadn't misremembered even that part.

He wrote back within the hour, breezy in a way that told me he hadn't yet understood what I was actually asking for. Of course, he said, he'd have it couriered over, original and transfer both, no trouble at all, he just hoped I wasn't going to make this difficult once I heard the whole thing in context. I read that twice, the word context sitting there like a small flag he didn't know he'd raised, and wrote back only, send it, and I'll decide what I hear.
