Chapter 4

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

The farmhouse looked dead.

Gray boards covered most of the windows.

Wild grass had swallowed the driveway.

A rusted mailbox leaned toward the road like it was exhausted from waiting.

Adrien arrived with Luca, Marcus, Elena, and four trusted security men shortly after sunrise.

Sophie remained at the estate with Dr. Cole and the triplets.

Elena had resisted leaving her.

But Adrien insisted.

"If someone knows about Sophie, she stays behind walls I control."

Elena had looked at him strangely.

"You really think you control those walls?"

It was a fair question.

Now Adrien stood outside the abandoned farmhouse holding Ryan Mercer's handwritten coordinates.

"Nobody has been here in years," Marcus said.

Luca crouched beside the porch.

"No."

He pointed toward the mud.

"Tire tracks."

Fresh.

Adrien drew his pistol.

Elena noticed.

Her face tightened.

He looked at her.

"Stay behind me."

"I'm not one of your employees right now."

"No. You're Sophie's mother."

Something passed between them.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Recognition.

Two parents standing inside the same nightmare.

They entered.

Dust covered the living room.

A broken piano rested beneath a sheet.

Old photographs had been removed from the walls, leaving pale rectangles behind.

Elena walked toward the fireplace.

"Ryan brought me here once."

Adrien looked around.

"Anything unusual?"

"He showed me a hiding place."

Marcus turned.

"Where?"

Elena crossed toward the stairs.

Beneath the third step was a small wooden panel.

She pressed it.

Nothing happened.

"Ryan said his grandfather kept emergency money inside."

Luca used a knife to pry the panel loose.

Inside was no money.

There was a metal box.

Adrien lifted it out.

Locked.

Luca broke the latch.

Inside were three flash drives.

A photograph.

And an envelope.

Elena picked up the photograph.

Her hands began trembling.

Ryan Mercer stood beside a younger Marcus Vale.

Behind them was Warehouse Twelve.

Adrien looked at Marcus.

"You met him more than once."

Marcus stared at the picture.

"Yes."

"You lied."

"I didn't lie."

"You withheld."

"In our world, that's often the same thing," Luca muttered.

Marcus ignored him.

"Ryan came to me three times."

"Why?"

"He believed someone was moving weapons through your legitimate shipping company."

Adrien stared.

"Mine?"

"Without your knowledge."

"Who?"

"He never identified them."

Elena opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Her name was written across the top.

She began reading.

Her face changed.

"Read it aloud," Adrien said gently.

Elena swallowed.

"If you're reading this, something went wrong."

Her voice broke.

She continued.

"I found proof that someone close to Moretti is using his network to move weapons and money. I don't trust police. I don't trust the company. And I don't know if I can trust Moretti."

Adrien almost smiled.

Smart man.

Elena continued.

"The important thing is Sophie."

She stopped.

Adrien looked at her.

"What?"

Elena's hands shook violently.

She read the next line.

"If our baby is born, never let anyone know what I hid for her."

Marcus stepped closer.

"Hid what?"

Elena scanned further.

Then stared at Adrien.

"A key."

"What key?"

She kept reading.

"I built the access system for Warehouse Twelve. There is a hidden data vault beneath the loading dock. The system requires three things: a code, a physical key, and a frequency signature."

Adrien frowned.

"Frequency?"

Elena continued.

"The cloth doll contains the tuning mechanism. No adult can reliably hear the confirmation tone. A child can."

Adrien felt suddenly cold.

The doll.

The clicking.

Sophie's hearing.

Ryan had designed a security mechanism around frequencies adults could barely detect.

Marcus whispered, "That's why someone needed the doll."

Elena nodded.

"And why they needed Sophie."

The farmhouse exploded with gunfire.

A window shattered.

Luca shoved Adrien behind the staircase.

"Down!"

Elena screamed.

One security guard fell.

Adrien fired toward the front window.

A black SUV roared from behind the barn.

Men opened fire from inside it.

Marcus dragged Elena toward the kitchen.

"Back door!"

They ran.

Another bullet punched through the wall.

Luca fired twice.

The SUV swerved.

Adrien and Elena reached the backyard.

A second vehicle blocked the road.

"They knew we'd come," Luca shouted.

Adrien looked toward Marcus.

Nobody else had known their destination until they found the coordinates.

Unless—

his gaze dropped toward the metal box.

A tracker.

Luca realized it too.

He ripped the lining from the bottom.

A blinking chip fell into his palm.

"Move!"

They escaped through the woods.

For fifteen brutal minutes, Adrien felt sixteen again—running between trees, calculating distance, listening for gunfire.

Elena stumbled.

Adrien caught her.

"Keep moving."

"I am."

A bullet hit a tree beside them.

Adrien pulled her down behind a stone wall.

"You okay?"

"Yes."

He looked at her.

Blood covered her sleeve.

"You're hit."

"It's a cut."

He checked.

She was right.

Shrapnel.

Not a bullet.

Their eyes met.

For one second, everything disappeared.

The gunmen.

The betrayal.

The past.

Adrien saw only a frightened mother refusing to break.

Then Marcus shouted from ahead.

"Road!"

A backup vehicle picked them up.

Luca drove.

Adrien sat beside Elena.

Marcus examined the flash drives.

"One is encrypted."

"Can you break it?"

"Maybe."

Elena held the letter.

"There is more."

Adrien looked at her.

She read silently.

Then her face went white.

"What?"

She handed him the page.

Adrien read the last paragraph.

If I disappear, the person responsible is someone named Vale.

Adrien slowly looked toward Marcus.

The SUV became silent.

Marcus stared at him.

"Adrien."

Luca's hand moved toward his weapon.

Marcus raised both hands.

"This isn't what you think."

Adrien pointed his pistol directly at the man he had called brother for twenty years.

"Explain."

"I told you Ryan came to me."

"The letter says Vale."

"My last name isn't exactly rare."

"You were photographed with him."

"Because I was helping him."

"Or silencing him."

Marcus's face tightened.

"You think I killed him?"

"I think I don't know you anymore."

That hurt.

Adrien could see it.

Good.

Betrayal was supposed to hurt.

Marcus slowly reached inside his jacket.

Luca turned.

"Don't."

Marcus froze.

"I'm reaching for my wallet."

Adrien nodded once.

Marcus removed a card.

Old.

Bent.

He handed it over.

Detective Daniel Cross.

Adrien stared.

"Why do you have this?"

"Because Cross contacted me after Ryan disappeared."

Elena looked up.

"The detective who told me Ryan died."

Marcus nodded.

"He told me Ryan was alive."

Silence.

Elena stopped breathing.

"What?"

"Ryan survived."

Tears filled her eyes.

"No."

"He went into hiding."

"No."

"Elena—"

"You don't get to say my name."

She slapped him.

Hard.

Marcus accepted it.

"You let me think he was dead?"

"He demanded it."

"Four years?"

"He said you and Sophie would be killed if anyone knew."

Elena hit him again.

This time Adrien stopped her.

"Where is Ryan?"

Marcus shook his head.

"I don't know."

"Then who does?"

"Cross."

Adrien looked at the old card.

The retired detective.

The man who had lied about a corpse.

The man tied to Ryan Mercer's disappearance.

"Find him."

Luca made calls.

Within half an hour they had an address.

Daniel Cross lived alone in a modest house outside White Plains.

They arrived before noon.

The front door stood open.

Adrien entered first.

Inside, furniture had been overturned.

A lamp lay shattered.

Blood marked the floor.

Elena covered her mouth.

Then they heard breathing.

Cross lay behind the kitchen island.

Alive.

Barely.

Dr. Cole was called.

Adrien knelt beside the old detective.

"Who did this?"

Cross opened one eye.

"Moretti."

"Who?"

Cross coughed.

"Should've known you'd finally come."

"Where is Ryan Mercer?"

Cross's eyes moved toward Elena.

Recognition.

"Elena."

She dropped beside him.

"Is Ryan alive?"

Cross nodded weakly.

"Where?"

He tried to speak.

Nothing.

Adrien leaned close.

Cross whispered two words.

"Your house."

Adrien froze.

"What?"

Cross grabbed his sleeve with surprising strength.

"He's been inside your house."

"Who?"

Cross coughed blood.

"Not Ryan."

Adrien stared.

"The man running everything."

"Name."

Cross's eyes began closing.

"Vale."

Adrien looked at Marcus.

Marcus shook his head.

Cross forced one more breath.

"Not Marcus."

His hand fell.

Elena leaned closer.

"Who?"

Cross whispered.

"Gabriel Vale."

Marcus turned pale.

Adrien had never seen him afraid like that.

"Who is Gabriel?" Elena asked.

Marcus stared at Adrien.

"My brother."

Adrien felt his stomach drop.

"You told me your brother died."

Marcus whispered.

"I thought he had."

Then Adrien's phone rang.

The estate.

He answered.

A terrified nanny screamed through the speaker.

"Mr. Moretti, Sophie's gone."

Adrien's entire world stopped.

"What?"

"The cameras failed. We can't find her."

Elena screamed.

Adrien stood.

Then a text appeared on his phone.

A photograph.

Sophie.

Alive.

Sitting in the back seat of a car.

The message beneath it contained six words.

BRING THE DOLL TO WAREHOUSE TWELVE.
