Chapter 6

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

The estate gates were burning when Adrien returned.

Smoke curled into the evening sky.

One guard was injured.

Another had been found unconscious near the service entrance.

Adrien jumped from the SUV before it stopped moving.

"Children?"

Luca shouted into his radio.

A response crackled.

"Safe room."

Adrien ran.

He crossed the foyer, took the stairs two at a time, and entered the east wing.

Dr. Cole stood outside the reinforced safe room.

"They're inside."

Adrien entered.

Theo saw him first.

"Dada!"

Adrien dropped to his knees.

Three tiny bodies rushed toward him.

He gathered them against his chest.

For several seconds, the feared Adrien Moretti disappeared.

There was only a father.

Theo pressed his face into Adrien's neck.

Miles grabbed his shirt.

Nora touched his cheek.

Adrien closed his eyes.

Safe.

They were safe.

Then Sophie entered with Elena and Ryan.

The triplets squealed.

Nora reached for Sophie.

The four children immediately settled onto the rug as though the armed men outside the door belonged to another universe.

Ryan stared.

"She calmed them?"

Adrien nodded.

"Saved them."

Ryan looked at his daughter.

Pride crossed his exhausted face.

Elena sat beside him.

For the first time, Adrien allowed himself to see them as a family.

Broken.

Interrupted.

But alive.

Marcus entered.

"We found three attackers."

"Alive?"

"Two."

"Gabriel?"

"Gone."

Adrien stood.

"What did he take?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Nothing."

Adrien frowned.

"Then why attack?"

Ryan spoke from behind him.

"Because he didn't come for something."

Everyone looked at him.

Ryan stood slowly.

"He came to plant something."

Adrien's blood went cold.

They searched immediately.

Twenty minutes later, a device was discovered beneath the kitchen.

Not a frequency emitter.

An explosive.

Then another in the garage.

Then a third near the electrical room.

Gabriel intended to destroy the house.

Adrien ordered an evacuation.

Staff flooded toward vehicles.

The children were carried outside.

Elena held Sophie.

Ryan limped beside them.

Adrien stopped in the foyer.

Marcus turned.

"What are you doing?"

"There's something he wants destroyed."

"Adrien."

"Ryan's evidence."

Ryan stared.

"The vault."

"No. Gabriel couldn't access it."

"Then what?"

Adrien understood.

The archive.

His father's records.

Thirty years of financial files stored beneath the house.

If Gabriel's operations had existed for years, evidence might be buried there.

Adrien looked at Luca.

"Get everyone out."

"I'm staying."

"That's an order."

Luca shook his head.

"Fire me tomorrow."

Marcus almost smiled.

Adrien did not.

They descended into the archive.

Rows of cabinets filled the underground room.

Adrien searched records from fifteen years earlier.

Warehouse Seven.

The supposed fire that killed Gabriel.

Invoices.

Insurance.

Security logs.

Then Marcus found it.

A payment.

Three million dollars transferred from a Moretti holding company to an offshore account two days before the fire.

Authorized by Adrien's father.

Marcus stared.

"Your father paid Gabriel."

Adrien read the document.

Why?

Another file explained.

Gabriel had discovered Adrien's father was secretly cooperating with federal investigators against a rival family.

Gabriel blackmailed him.

Adrien's father paid.

Then staged Gabriel's death.

Not to protect Gabriel.

To erase the scandal.

Adrien felt sick.

"My father created this."

Ryan shook his head.

"Gabriel created Gabriel."

Adrien looked at him.

"You don't inherit another man's sins unless you choose them."

The sentence struck harder than any accusation.

Adrien had spent his life defending Moretti power because he believed family loyalty required it.

Maybe loyalty did not mean protecting everything your family built.

Maybe sometimes it meant ending what should never have been built at all.

A warning beep sounded.

Luca looked at his watch.

"Bomb squad says one device is unstable."

"Time?"

"Unknown."

Adrien grabbed the files.

They ran.

The first explosion hit as they reached the foyer.

Glass shattered.

Fire erupted from the west wing.

Adrien hit the floor.

Marcus pulled him up.

"Move!"

They reached the terrace.

Another explosion shook the house.

The nursery windows burst outward.

Adrien stared as flames swallowed the room where his children had slept.

A strange peace settled over him.

That room had represented everything he thought safety meant.

Money.

Walls.

Security.

Control.

It had never been safe.

Sophie had been safe because Elena loved her.

The triplets had survived because strangers had chosen them over themselves.

Ryan had disappeared to protect his family.

Luca had refused to leave.

Marcus had risked his life despite Adrien's distrust.

Safety was not a building.

It was people.

Sirens approached.

Federal agents arrived shortly after.

Not police.

Daniel Cross, before losing consciousness, had contacted an old federal partner.

Ryan handed over the flash drives.

Adrien handed over his father's records.

Marcus stared.

"You know what happens if you give them everything."

Adrien did.

Investigations.

Businesses seized.

Charges.

Enemies circling.

An empire weakened.

"Yes."

"You could lose half of what you built."

Adrien looked toward his children.

"Then I lose it."

Marcus studied him.

"You spent your whole life building the Moretti name."

Adrien's answer came easily.

"My children don't need a name people fear."

He watched Theo trying to hand Sophie a cookie.

"They need a father they don't have to fear."

Hours later, Elena found Adrien sitting on the hood of an SUV.

The estate burned behind him.

She sat beside him.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then she said, "Thank you."

"For what?"

"My daughter."

"You don't thank someone for doing what he should."

Elena looked toward Ryan.

"He wants us to start over."

Adrien nodded.

"You should."

She looked at him.

"And you?"

Adrien watched the fire.

"I don't know."

For years, certainty had been his armor.

Now he had none.

Strangely, it felt lighter.

Elena nudged his shoulder.

"Sophie likes you."

"She has questionable judgment."

Elena laughed.

Adrien smiled.

Then Luca approached.

"We found Gabriel."

Adrien stood.

"Where?"

"Not far."

A surveillance drone had detected him moving through woods behind the property.

Armed.

Injured.

Heading toward the lake.

Adrien walked after Luca.

Elena called his name.

He turned.

"Come back."

Adrien looked at her.

It was a simple sentence.

But he understood what she meant.

Do not become the man everyone expects.

Do not finish this the old way.

Do not let Gabriel choose who you are.

Adrien nodded.

They found Gabriel near the lake.

He was bleeding from the shoulder.

Gun in hand.

Federal agents approached from the opposite side.

Gabriel laughed when he saw Adrien.

"Come to finish it?"

Adrien stopped ten feet away.

"No."

Gabriel raised his weapon.

"You've gotten weak."

Adrien looked at him calmly.

"No."

He thought of Theo.

Miles.

Nora.

Sophie.

Elena.

Ryan.

He lowered his own gun.

"I finally found something more important than being feared."

Gabriel sneered.

"Your father would be ashamed."

Adrien smiled.

"Good."

Gabriel fired.

The shot went wide.

Federal agents returned fire.

Gabriel fell.

Alive.

Disarmed.

Handcuffed.

Adrien watched them take him away.

No execution.

No revenge.

No body disappearing into a river.

The Moretti tradition ended beside that lake.

When Adrien returned, Theo ran toward him.

Adrien lifted his son.

Sophie appeared beside Elena.

"Did you get the bad man?"

Adrien crouched.

"The police did."

Sophie considered this.

"Good."

Then she held out something.

The repaired cloth doll.

Ryan had stitched the back closed.

Adrien stared.

"I thought that was yours."

Sophie shook her head.

"Nora wants it."

Nora reached for the doll.

Adrien laughed.

"Apparently that's settled."

For the first time in years, he laughed without checking who was listening.
